Short Story-child Makes the Woman Complete
Child makes the woman complete.

I got a daughter in law. She was most beautiful and she belonged to a very rich family. The parents of Pushpa gave us a large number of items and a big amount in cash in dowry and even now they were giving more and more things to Pushpa and she never came back empty handed. My son was happy that he could get a girl of his choice and I too was happy because here in India each woman wants that her son must bring a wife who should not be all alone but should bring a huge dowry.
But during the last two years, Pushpa never complained of vomiting and therefore, I was worried that I shall not be having a grand son. I had been talking on this subject to my husband, but he was not in hurry. He had been telling me that we should give time to the new couple and they must enjoy their life. They shall be having children and they shall be having responsibilities to bring them up and then they shall have to look after their study and training etc. etc. This is the life of a common Indian and therefore, He wanted that the children may have some time for enjoyment.
But after the fourth year even some of my old friends had been coming to my house and they had been suggesting me that I should send my daughter in law to a particular Asharam where most of the visiting girls could get a child. The Asharam was having such a reputation. And therefore, I had started talking to my daughter in law, who was not agreeing to this proposal. She was an educated girl and was in service. She was not believing in all these blind faiths in saints and at religious places. So she declined. But at the same time she said that she is satisfied that she is having fertility and she is able to give birth to a child one day. On the other hand my son was not agreeing for medical check-up. And all these situations were having trouble for me. I was in need of a grand son because we had properties of lakhs of rupees and if there shall be no grand son, the properties shall go the people who were not within the zone of my liking. I wanted at one stage that my son should divorce this girl and should have another wife so that she could give a grand son to her. But his son was not agreeing to this proposal too.
Ultimately I could persuade my daughter in law to visit the asharam and stay there for two nights. I collected information about the asharam and arranged what they needed before entry of a woman there in the asharam. The asharam was managed by ladies and therefore, I could calculate that there shall be no harm to my daughter in law and to our reputation. Most of the ladies I met had got praise for that asharam and therefore, I could explain all the things to my daughter in law.
My daughter in law and I both were ready to visit the asharam. I had made all the arrangements and I had the money with me. My son shall be leaving us in the asharam through his car and then he shall be waiting in a hotel. I had also been informed that they would not allow me to stay with my daughter in law and therefore, I asked my son to make arrangement of two people in the hotel.
We were to start our journey on Sunday and on Friday, my mother in law came and thus the whole arrangement had to be adjourned for some days. My mother in law started asking all questions about the family and during these discussions, she also talked about the grand son. I told her that we shall be going to the asharam and I informed her that from that aharam none comes back dis-satisfied. She heard all about the visit and then passed her own order, “ A grand son may come or may not come. But I would never allow my grand daughter in law to visit that asharam. I had visited that asharam and could get this son who is your husband. I had been detained there for three nights and what they had been doing with me, at least I would not tell you. You should understand all this because you are a woman and a woman must understand what I want to say, but is not in a position to disclose.” The program had to be dropped because I could understand what my mother in law was trying to tell me. And from that date, I could understand as to why my husband was not having all the traits of the family in which he had born.
